Scaling and root planing is an effective treatment for the early stages of gum disease (called gingivitis), as well as more advanced gum disease. This procedure removes plaque and tartar from the root surfaces of the tooth as well as the deep periodontal pockets. It also removes the bacteria from the surfaces of the tooth. It is the least invasive treatment for gum disease.

The patient is given a local anesthetic, which makes them comfortable during the process. Scaling and root planing leaves the teeth clean and smooth, making it hard for bacteria to stick to them. It treats the early stages of gum disease to prevent it from progressing. Your mouth will be evaluated during your dental exam with Dr. Karen Randall to determine if you need this treatment.
